How far is your browser from each data centre?
Press measure and your browser times the round trip to 38 data centres of five cloud providers. It takes about ten seconds.
The requests go straight from your browser to each provider. Nothing is sent to us.
The data centres on this chart
Vultr
11 locations: Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, São Paulo, Mumbai, Johannesburg
DigitalOcean
8 locations: Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, New York, Toronto, Singapore, Bangalore, Sydney
Hetzner
6 locations: Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, Ashburn, Hillsboro, Singapore
Linode (Akamai)
5 locations: Frankfurt, London, Newark, Singapore, Tokyo
AWS Lightsail
8 locations: Frankfurt, N. Virginia, Oregon, Singapore, UAE, Mumbai, Sydney, São Paulo
Endpoints checked 2026-10-13. Many managed hosts (Cloudways, Kinsta, Rocket.net and others) rent servers in these same buildings, so a city's number applies to them too.
Questions people ask
What does the number mean?
It is the round trip in milliseconds: how long a tiny request takes to reach the data centre and come back to your browser. Under 50 ms feels instant, under 100 ms is fine for most sites, above 150 ms you start to notice it on every click.
Is anything sent to Hosting Compass?
No. Your browser sends small requests straight to each provider's public speed-test address and times them. We do not receive or store the results. If you allowed analytics, we only count that a measurement ran.
Why measure from my browser and not a server?
Because your visitors use browsers too. A server test from one data centre tells you little about the trip from your city. Measure from where your visitors are, or use the region buttons for an estimate.
Why do the numbers change between runs?
Wi-Fi, mobile networks, VPNs and busy routers all add delay. We take the fastest of three requests after the connection is open (six for Hetzner, whose servers reuse connections less reliably), which is close to the real network distance. Run it twice if a number looks odd.
Which hosts can you measure?
Hosts that publish speed-test endpoints: Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Linode and AWS. Managed hosts such as Cloudways and Kinsta run on these same clouds, so the numbers for a city apply to them too.
