Fine print we read

The page shows 'Renews at $9.99/mo' with 'For 36 month term'. The renewal billing term isn't stated. Only a 36-month term is shown. The free domain covers 1 year on 12 or 36-month terms and must be redeemed within 90 days, after which it renews at the current rate. Cancelling in year 1 incurs a non-refundable domain fee. Includes free CDN and Let's Encrypt SSL. Pro Email is a trial that auto-renews at $2.50/mo. VAT is not included. No setup fee is listed. Business plan: $6.99 intro, renews at $13.99, 50 sites / 50 GB. The page's JSON-LD still lists an older 'Basic' plan at $2.95, which conflicts with the visible table; the visible $3.99 Starter price is used. WP Pro / cloud was not researched (optional).

Bluehost delivers on its promise of making WordPress hosting accessible to everyone. While it doesn't lead in raw performance or advanced features, its unmatched ease of use and WordPress integration make it a solid recommendation for beginners.

Overview

Bluehost has been a dominant force in web hosting since 2003. Now owned by Newfold Digital (formerly EIG), it hosts over 2 million websites and remains one of only three hosts officially recommended by WordPress.org. Their focus on simplicity and WordPress integration continues to attract beginners.

Performance

Performance has improved significantly since Bluehost migrated to a revamped infrastructure. Average page load times in our tests were around 420ms, respectable but not class-leading. TTFB averaged 250ms from US servers.

Uptime over our monitoring period was 99.94%, which meets but doesn't exceed industry standards. During traffic spikes, shared plans showed some performance degradation, which is expected at this price point.

Ease of Use

This is where Bluehost excels. The onboarding experience is arguably the smoothest in the industry. New users are guided through domain selection, WordPress installation, theme selection, and basic customization in a single, seamless flow.

The custom dashboard integrates directly with WordPress, offering a unified experience for managing both hosting and site settings. It's clearly designed for users who have never hosted a website before.

Support

24/7 support is available via live chat and phone. Chat response times averaged 4-8 minutes in our testing, which is acceptable but slower than top competitors. Support quality was mixed, basic issues were resolved quickly, but complex technical questions sometimes required escalation.

The knowledge base is comprehensive, with well-written articles and video tutorials covering common tasks.

Pricing & Value

Bluehost's Basic plan starts at $2.95/month, which includes a free domain for the first year, free SSL, and 10 GB of storage. The Choice Plus plan ($5.45/month) adds domain privacy, automated backups, and unlimited websites.

Like most hosts, these prices require a 36-month commitment, and renewal rates approximately double. The value proposition is solid for the first term but becomes average at renewal.

Security

All plans include free SSL, spam protection, and basic DDoS mitigation. CodeGuard backups are available as an add-on or included in higher-tier plans. SiteLock malware scanning is offered but at an additional cost on lower plans.

Who Should Choose Bluehost?

Bluehost remains an excellent choice for WordPress beginners, bloggers starting their first site, and small businesses wanting a hassle-free setup experience. Power users and developers may find the feature set limiting.

Prices mentioned in these notes are from the time of the test. Current prices are in the plans above.
